Make Soft Skills Count

Thursday, December 16th, 2021

While hard skills are what will get you noticed for a job, soft skills are what make the true difference in the workplace. They will make you stand out from the crowd and will help you build connections with your work colleagues. GL staffing wants to help show which soft skills are most important in today’s workplace.

Soft Skills in the Workplace

The best way to look at soft skills is to think back to a teacher or manager that you liked and had a good connection with. You likely remembered them so well because they made you feel encouraged and understood. Soft skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving are all that make someone seem like a hero in the workplace. They make you a better colleague, leader, and overall human being. Essentially, the skills that make people trust and value you.

Why are Soft Skills so Important

In today’s world, Emails, messaging apps, and emojis have become the new normal instead of face-to-face communication. While they prove to be convenient and helpful, they have created a large disconnect between everyone. People just dont have the courage or motivation to speak to someone directly. Companies now need good soft skills more than ever. A team can’t properly function without having someone who will step up and lead.

Soft Skills on Your Resume

While it’s always important to have your hard skills on your resume, having a good balance of hard and soft skills could ultimately be the difference-maker if you get a job or end up in the recycling bin. Don’t just put one-word responses on your resumes such as ‘leadership’ or ‘communication’. Instead, be more descriptive and say how you’ve used those skills. Something like “ Organized weekly meetings to grow connections within a team”. This displays your skills much better than just one simple word.

Soft Skills During an Interview

While you can write whatever you want on a resume, the interview is where you really need your soft skills to shine in person. Make sure to use a good tone of voice and keep good body language. This shows good confidence and that you have the ability to connect with others around you. During an interview, be prepared to answer questions relating to these soft skills:

  • Problem-solving skills: Be able to think of solutions on the spot as well as analyze information.
  • Values: Make sure to do your research and be able to relate to any questions they may ask you about charities or ex-colleagues.
  • Teamwork: When questions come up about teamwork, try to show how you were an important asset to past projects you’ve been a part of.

Tips On Returning To Working From The Office

Tuesday, April 20th, 2021

GL Staffing Transition to work from office

2020 hit us like a storm and companies had to scramble to make provisions for staff to work remotely and not have operations scuttled due to the effects of Covid-19. Home offices sprung up and millions of desks, chairs, and coffee pots were shipped to homes across the US as workers settled into the new norm of remote work. As situations change and more states begin to reopen fully, staff will be transitioning back into office. But how do we deal with the change of going back to in-person work after a whole year at home?

Transitioning to a remote position will undoubtedly be a mammoth task for some. Making the move back to a physical office can be a challenging shift. (The fact that working in PJs is frowned upon is just the tip of the iceberg.)

If you are transitioning from remote work back to being in the office, here are a few tips that can help make the transition as seamless and painless as possible.

Take A Piece of Home to The Office

We’ve all become acclimated to and in some cases even become dependent on the creature comforts of home. One of the most jarring things about leaving the comforts of your home office is that the at-home conveniences you’re used to, like having the refrigerator within arm’s reach and not having to put on pants all day, are no longer feasible.

While you will no longer be able to go without pants or have your party playlist blasting in the background at your corporate desk, you can ease the transition by finding a couple of ways to make your new office feel more familiar. Things like bringing in a potted plant, a battery-operated waterfall, or even bringing a scented oil diffuser can go a far way to help you feel a little more at home.

Bringing a slice of home with you to the office can go a long way in helping you ease back into the flow of work.

Keep Your Routine Going

Having an effective routine was paramount for successfully navigating the work from home landscape. It was necessary to have structure in an otherwise totally unstructured environment. Bringing that same structure and routine with you to the office is a must when transitioning back to the office. Having great time management skills and dedication to completing the daily tasks is very important but so is also knowing how to have an effective work-life balance. So, having a routine will help keep you balanced and focused.

Going back to work will inevitably bring back distractions such as those impromptu water cooler meetings and trips to the copy room that turn into department meetings. But, in this world of unscheduled distractions, try to stick to some semblance of a routine. This will help you be as productive as possible. Yes, some elements may be difficult to implement but if you typically responded to emails and checked on industry trends in the morning while you worked from home, make that the same routine while back in the office. Above all do not be afraid to communicate your preferences to your co-workers and inform them of your need to stick to a certain flow. Establishing time boundries is an essential part of structuring your workflow and making sure you are at your most productive level when transitioning back to the office.

Effective Communication Leads to Transparency

Effective remote work pretty much demanded constant and proactive communication with your team members. Due to the fact that your co-workers couldn’t just stop by to discuss a project, it was paramount that you responded to emails and instant messages in a timely manner. On your routine to the office don’t fall into the trap of feeling like proximity is an effective form of communication. Do not assume that everyone is on the same page but stick to a pattern of prompt response and effective communication with your team members.

Branch Out, Within Reason

The hardest part of transitioning back to the office will be the utter shattering of your once quiet day. Going from total isolation to an office filled with chatter, laughter, ringing phones and other sounds/distractions you haven’t had in over a year will take some getting used to.  While you may be tempted to catch up on the latest office “goss” or debate who is the G.O.A.T Michael or LeBron, it can also be tough to keep up the same level of productivity when you’re suddenly surrounded by other persons.

Having self-discipline is crucial to the onslaught of new workplace socialization. Try blocking out time to connect with colleagues and as stated above, don’t be afraid to set boundaries on your time.

Working remotely had its good side but going back to the office doesn’t have to feel like a departure from that if you take the right steps. Autonomy, work ethic, effective time management, and comfort are all transferrable. While the adjustments may initially be overwhelming, with practice and patience you can find success and satisfaction on “the inside,” too.

Tips on How To Retain Workers

Monday, March 29th, 2021

The exact numbers may be unknown, but there is no doubt that professionals in the 21st century change jobs many times over the course of their careers. Gone are the days when employees spent 20-to-30 years with the same company. This is due to a range of features such as some jobs becoming obsolete due to automation, technology, and market factors such as customer demand. The change in market dynamics has also affected the way Human Resources departments operate their recruiting, interviewing, and training processes. With the change in the hiring landscape, there are things you can do to stem the revenue-draining effects of this costly cycle, consider the following points to optimize employee retention.

Hire The Right Employees

This might seem like a no-brainer but hiring the right people for the job is like putting the right fuel in your car. The tricky part is that it is difficult to tell at first glance if someone is the right fit until you have had a chance to evaluate them performing the job for a while. However, there are things you can do to gauge a person’s competence level with regard to performing the tasks at hand.

Your goal is to find someone who is driven and passionate about what they do and passionate about what your company does. Look out for persons who have the drive to contribute and expand their role within your organization. During the screening process, pay close attention to the reason they parted ways with their previous jobs. If they are seeking upward movement in their career then that can be a good sign. But if a pattern of lateral career moves shows up then this should set off your “spidey-senses”. Questions such as how many jobs have you had in the past 2-3 years can in effect flush out a pattern and may show that this candidate may seek to jump ship once they are faced with workplace challenges. Another great way to perform due diligence is to ask for personal and professional references. Ask open-ended questions to find out the candidate’s personality, work ethic, and overall attitude when in and out of a professional situation.

Have a Workplace Culture

We spend a huge chunk of our day at work so it’s no surprise that employees look at the workplace as more than a means to getting a paycheck. They want to work in an environment that caters to the whole person, allowing them to feel fulfilled and appreciated in the tasks they execute for your company. Employees want to feel valued and appreciated and also challenged to accomplish goals and once those goals are accomplished they want to feel recognized for a job well done.

None of this is possible if the company culture is not one that is welcoming and enduring to its employees. Businesses should strive to develop and maintain an environment that your ideal candidate wants to be a part of. Consider putting in place a mentorship program that will allow your seasoned employees to be able to impart knowledge to the new members of staff. This ensures that there is proper succession planning and also fosters teamwork and partnerships. New hires will be able to see what they can achieve with diligent work and the senior staff can impart the knowledge they have gained from their time at the company.

Proper Employee Compensation is Key

It goes without saying that employees want to be paid for hard work. When employees are completely satisfied in their position, the way to get them to defect is by offering more attractive compensation in a highly similar role. When this happens, and a competitor comes in and offers one of your best employees a 20% higher salary to work for them, it can be tempting to let that employee move on and try to find a cheaper replacement. This is not usually the best course of action as one needs to factor in the cost of recruiting, onboarding, and training a new employee. not to mention the cost of the brain drain that will happen from losing a tenured employee who knows your company inside and out.

You may end up costing yourself more in the long run by losing an employee for compensation reasons. Proper compensation without breaking the bank will show employees they are valued and establish a level of trust. In fact, the higher wages usually pay for themselves in the short run.

A Great Work Environment Fosters Creativity

The days of the suit and tie, briefcase, and constricted office cubicle are fast becoming a relic of the past. Today’s employees prefer a more open concept where they can interact with co-workers in a more communal environment. This allows for collaborative efforts and fosters an arena where your employees can allow their creativity to shine through. Open spaces allow for the free flow of ideas and there is something about open spaces and natural light that aids with comparing fatigue and keeps your employees excited about coming to work each day.

Consider Alternative “Office’ Solutions – Working Remote

With the globalized economy that we now operate in the dated concept of the traditional 9-to-5 is fast becoming a thing of the past. The advent of broadband internet means that we no longer have to be tied to offices and schedules. Cloud-based technology means that staff can access and share files with each other without having to physically be in the same space. If covid has taught us one thing it is that employees are perfectly capable of performing their job functions remotely and some may even be more efficient with this option. Updating your business model to suit the needs of today’s workers can see your company moving with the times and help to stem the tide of employee turnover.

How to Get That Promotion at Work

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2020

After working in your company for so long, you find yourself wanting to work in a higher, important role. And this isn’t just simply because you want to make more money, you also want to achieve a higher sense of accomplishment. But while putting in harder work may seem like the best way to get that promotion, it’s important you recognize that there are other important factors at play here. And if you’re not entirely sure what they are, then continue reading below to learn what you can do to get that promotion at work.

Getting That Work Promotion

The most important steps you can take to receive your promotion include:

Understanding Your Company’s Value

[spacer height=”20px”]

In order to receive that promotion, you should first think about what your company wants from you. All employers want their employees to be able to contribute to the value of the company. So when you’re trying to get that promotion, make conscious efforts that will add value to your place of business. Some ways of increasing the value of your company can include improving your skills to increasingly deliver better results for your company and even exposing yourself to a broader range of company activities that will enable you to widen your knowledge, skills, and experience.

Paying Close Attention to People Who’ve Gotten Promoted

[spacer height=”20px”]

Look closely at those who’ve gotten promoted at your company so that you can identify what steps you can take to get promoted yourself. Situational awareness is one of the best ways you can claim a promotion. Look for personality traits, achievements, and even habits among those who are in a higher position than you. Such observations can provide you with a better understanding of what you need to do to get a promotion yourself.

Some companies, for instance, have employees who demonstrate good social skills. If this is the case in your company, make the effort to be more social when possible. Being more social will mean attending company events and parties.

Asking For Feedback From Your Supervisor

[spacer height=”20px”]

Sometimes, one of the best ways to receive your promotion is to simply ask what it takes. Meet with your supervisor and/or manager and ask for their feedback. To get valuable feedback on your performance, try these steps:

  • – Present your case for promotion to your supervisor as professionally as possible.
  • – Make a list of your responsibilities and achievements and revaluate them after you receive your feedback.
  • – Demonstrate how your work has benefitted the operations of the company. If you can, do it with numbers.
  • – Express your desire to advance your career.

[spacer height=”20px”]

Identifying & Solving Problems

[spacer height=”20px”]

All businesses have flaws. And by identifying them and even trying to solve them, you’ll be able to distinguish yourself as an excellent employee and even possibly show leadership by taking the initiative to solve them.

Take a look around your office for anything that’s obstructing company productivity, creating unnecessary costs, or even undermining safety. When you recognize these issues, make plans to improve those areas. Your company will recognize your efforts and you’ll be able to increase your chances for a promotion.

Maintaining a Strong Work Ethic

[spacer height=”20px”]

While all the above factors are essential, the most imperative factor in employee promotion is maintaining a strong work performance. Therefore, you should always continually demonstrate a solid work ethic and strive to become the hardest-working individual in the company.

Benefits of IT Staffing Services

Thursday, May 7th, 2020

For many modern businesses today, the technology you depend can serve as the fine line between ultimate success and total failure. Your technological equipment can be used to help assist your employees with everyday tasks, ensuring smooth operations. But if your technology is malfunctioning or is simply troubleshooting, you can expect setbacks which will cost your business some money. Don’t be amongst the many who suffer from troubling technology. Get the help you need today, and hire IT personnel through a staffing agency. Utilizing IT staffing services through a staffing agency actually has many benefits that will help your business grow. Continue Reading below to learn more.

Benefits of IT Staffing Services

Massive Talent Network

Staffing agencies possess an ever-growing network of available talent. And when you get your IT Services from a staffing agency that performs background checks, such as GL Staffing, your new hires are sure to be the most qualified. During their background checks, staffing agencies will verify references and education, as well as other important information that fit to your standards. Their broad database of qualified employees enables quick responses.

Cost-Effective

Finding a good match for your open IT positions is time-consuming and it can also be costly. Most companies will invest quite a bit of money to look for the right new recruit and in the end, they’ve spent more than they intended. Staffing agencies take the time in finding the right person, so you don’t have to waste yours. And most offer their services at competitive, affordable rates.

Reduced Liability

There used to be only a few labor laws in older times. But now there are so many today that it’s difficult to keep track of all of them. You, an employer can face certain potential penalties with the number of employees you have. And it’s all because you weren’t aware of some laws. Using a staffing agency, however, shifts the potential risk away from the company.

Most Qualified Hires

Staffing agencies will choose the best, most qualified IT employee so that you don’t get the element of surprise. Due to their diligence in background checks, staffing agencies will never send you someone to be interviewed if they believe they’re not qualified enough. It’s ultimately their goal to find for you the right person. This is because most employers usually take little time to thoroughly inspect resumes and pick out a few to interview that show potential.

Minimized Risk

Staffing agencies grant you the choice of hiring part-time, or temporary employees. This allows you to get a glimpse of the work they can provide you and if you’re satisfied with their results, you can offer them a permanent position.

Contact GL Staffing For Professional IT Services

Tips For Success At A New Job

Thursday, December 5th, 2019

If you’ve recently started a new job, you must have a fresh and open mind. This is because not all workplaces are the same. People, and in turn, attitudes can be much different from place to place, regardless of the industry. GL Staffing is here to provide budding and veteran professionals alike with a few tips on how you can be successful at your new job.

Keep An Open Mind And Say “Yes”

With a new job comes new assignments. These may be above or below your skill level. Regardless, you received this assignment for a reason, and it’s up to you to figure it out. If the assignment is out of your skillset, give it a shot regardless! Unless, of course, you risk harming something to do with the business. But showing a willingness to take on challenging assignments is a surefire way to show your new employer(s) that you’re ambitious and ready for whatever challenge comes your way.

Establish Achievable Goals

Work with your new employer regarding personal goals that you want to set for yourself within the company. These goals can be several things – from mastering a skill to completing a project, or anything else. Regardless, ensure that these goals are fully achievable and within your skillset.

Be Vocal

Don’t be a show-off, but show your knowledge whenever applicable. If you think you have a way to improve a current system or the workflow, let others know. This shows peers and employers alike that you’re not just there to work, but to improve the business through your experience and new ideas.

Be A Problem Solver & Ask For Feedback

When something goes amiss at your new job, don’t run to your boss or supervisor right away. Instead, attempt to solve the issue yourself, or with the help of your team. When you solve this problem, explain to your employer the issue you faced, and the solution you used to fix it. If you can’t solve a problem yourself, asking your boss is okay. Just don’t make a habit of this! After you’ve completed a bigger task, it’s always a good idea to ask “How did I do?” This allows you to fix any mistakes that may have occurred along the way, and to take in some knowledge on how to improve your processes.

Choose GL Staffing To Be Your Staffing Agency Of Choice

At GL Staffing, we give our new hires the best tools possible to ensure they’re successful with their current position. There are many benefits of getting a job through a staffing agency. If you’d like to learn more about GL Staffing and how we can help you secure a job, give us a call at (954) 973-8350 or contact us online.

What Companies Are Looking For In Prospective Employees

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019

As people come to the end of their career at one job or decide to get back in the job market, they quickly realize that they’re a bit rusty and need to brush up on their interviewing skills. While many interviews may seem like every question is fruitless and doesn’t go anywhere, however, each one is designed to elicit a certain response and discover what types of qualities you have as an employee. While there are a number of questions that you could be asked during an interview, there are five vital qualities that every company looks for in employees.

Essential Qualities For Prospective Employees

  • Potential For Longevity
  • Drive And Dedication
  • Can Operate Alone Or With A Team
  • Creativity

Potential For Longevity

Companies are constantly looking for long-term solutions. Going through the hiring cycle can be exhausting as the search for the perfect fit continues. People get hired with hopes of them being the solution, however, they don’t really fill the gap and leave the company in the same place it was previously. Companies want employees who are looking to make an impact for a long time. Even temporary hires and contractual hires are designed to highlight the potential for these temporary employees to stay onboard for the long-term. They want someone who fits the culture properly and can be a valuable asset for years to come. This requires prospective employees to be willing to learn and grow alongside the company. This is vital for prospective employees to keep in mind while being interviewed by either a professional staffing service or HR representative.

Drive And Dedication

Prospective employees should be aware that companies are constantly on the lookout for employees with the drive and dedication to tackle any project. They want people who are early, on-time, and ready to get to work each and every day. Having the drive and dedication to work hard day in and day out means a lot, as they don’t need someone that’s going to slouch around all day and simply collect a paycheck. They’re looking for someone that’s going to make an immediate impact, and inspire those around them to work just as hard.

Can Operate Alone Or With A Team

The age-old interview question “are you a team player or work better alone” has categorized and outcasted prospective employees for years. As an introvert, you may find that you complete your best work when left to your own devices, but aren’t comfortable working with others. Team players may be great at brainstorming and working on group projects but crumple at the thought of working by themselves. The employee companies are looking for can still be on either way of the spectrum, however, they’re able to still perform on the other side. A “hybrid of sorts can still go off on their own and complete their daily tasks alone, and still contribute effectively to a brainstorming session, or group work.

Creativity

As cliche as it may sound, being able to think outside of the box to overcome obstacles is a huge quality for prospective employees. Versatility and flexibility in the moment of a problem arising can be just what everyone needs to get over the hump. This ability to take a step back and suggest an unconventional solution to an issue makes potential employees highly sought after.

Prospective employees everywhere should be aware of these qualities before going into an interview with a company or professional staffing company. They should also be prepared for the interview itself.

If you’re looking to join a professional company but don’t know where to start, consider GL Staffing, South Florida’s leading professional staffing solution. Contact us today at +1 (954) 973-8350 to learn more about our staffing services for both prospective employees and employers alike.

Types Of Professional Staffing Solutions

Thursday, March 7th, 2019

As a job seeker or business owner, you’ll come across jobs that require different types of staffing. Prospective employees will notice that not every job is full-time, while business owners will quickly come to realize that not every project is designed the same. You may require more employees just to get a particular job done, or it may be time to expand your business. Whatever it may be, knowing the different types of professional staffing solutions ensures that you find the right job or the right people for the job.

Types Of Professional Staffing Solutions

  • Temporary
  • Temporary To Permanent
  • Permanent

Temporary

Temporary employment is a common type of professional staffing solution that’s ideal for the short-term. This may include projects that take a few months to complete as well as seasonal work such as Tax Season. Temporary employment may also include instances which require a short-term fill-in while another employee is taking a leave of absence, on maternity leave, vacation, etc. Temporary work can be a flexible and useful option for both the employer as well as job seekers. Employers will find that professional staffing solutions are able to save them money since they don’t have to hire another full-time employee. Jobseekers are able to gain experience across a range of verticals to learn what they like to do and boost their resume.

Temporary To Permanent

Otherwise referred to as “contract to hire”, Temporary to Permanent employment is a great option for both employers and prospective employees. Temporary to permanent acts a middle ground between temporary employment and permanent employment. Temp to Perm allows companies to test employees, while the employee is able to learn more about a certain profession and decide if it’s for them. It acts as a trial run for both parties, and if the employee is a good fit and they enjoy working within the culture, the job becomes permanent.

Permanent

Permanent professional employment solutions are the most common type of employment. Permanent employees are those that are intended to be with the company for an extended period of time. These employees typically receive a salary as well as benefits. Permanent employees are extensively trained, as their expected to be with the company for a very long time. Permanent employees tend to be highly skilled and blend into the work environment quickly. These highly skilled employees are also far more attracted to permanent positions than temporary and temporary to permanent as they’re more concrete options.

Whichever type of professional staffing solutions you may need, a recruiting and staffing agency are there to help you find the quality talent you need. As the number one professional staffing agency in South Florida, GL Staffing works with both job seekers and employers to connect one another. Our recruiters are highly knowledgeable across a wide range of verticals and industries, ensuring that job seekers will be placed properly and companies will receive highly skilled talent. If interested in our professional staffing solutions, contact us today by calling us at (954) 973-8350.
